Windsor Spitfires defenseman Nick Ebert has moved onto the leader board for defensemen scoring leaders and among the draft eligible players in assists. Ebert got off to a slow and disappointing start for the Spitfires but in the past 10 games has begun to put up assists.
Scott Laughton of the Oshawa Generals, is known for his two way play and has come alive offensively lately. He joins the leaders in both points and assists. After a strong week, the Erie Otters' Connor Brown is now among the goal scoring leaders with 18. And returning from injury, Malcolm Subban continues to lead all goaltenders, not just draft eligible ones, in goals against average and save percentage.

A Look At Some Of The Injuries In The OHL
Selecting players for any draft for any sport is a crap shoot at the best of times. But when most of the top players that are available have missed significant time, what do you do?
This isn't just an OHL problem, but has been almost a plague of sorts throughout the CHL this season. With players like Alex Galchenyuk, Ryan Murray, and Martin Frk, we at least have last year to look at, the latter two already making their return. Galchenyuk is rumored to be coming back as early as March. but does he really need to to solidify himself as a top 10 or top 5 pick? I suppose one would like to see how his knee responds.
Nail Yakupov has missed time at different points in the season but that hasn't stopped him from topping just about every ranking from NHL Central Scouting to the blogger in his mother's basement. This guy is just pure gold and if he didn't play another game this season, would probably still be tops on most lists.
Malcolm Subban seems to be another that hasn't had his rankings hurt with the time he's missed. In fact, I would say its been even more solidified with the fact the Belleville Bulls just can't seem to buy a win when he's not playing, proving even more so, how valuable he truly is.
Where it does get tricky is further down the list. What do you do with a Matia Marcantuoni who's been plagued with injuries this season and is now out for the year? Ditto with Slater Koekkoek. What about Jarrod Maidens who's missed the last two months with a concussion? How much does that influence your decision not to select him?
I really liked Adam Pelech's chances this year of showing what he can do, but he to missed the first two months of the season, and although he's played extremely well for Erie since his return, how many people are going to notice when he's playing in Erie? Granted, with Dane Fox and others there, scouts will get a look at him but did his stock drop before the puck did on the season?
This has to be one of the worst draft classes for injuries to the top players in recent memory. One things for certain: NHL teams will get their money's worth from their scouts in June. Question is: will they make the right choices? It's almost a guessing game right now.
Here's a look at some of the injuries to players that were projected in the first round or just looking in. I've shown my rankings of the players back in October and January for comparison. It should be noted that in the case of Nail Yakupov and Olli Maatta and their injuries in December, that part of that time was at the World Junior Championships and where the injuries occurred.

Ceci Surpasses Yakupov As The OHL's Draft Eligible Assists Leader
Ottawa 67's defenseman Cody Ceci has surpassed the Sarnia Stings' Nail Yakupov as the assists leader among the OHL's draft eligible players. Ceci now has 10 goals and 34 assists for 44 points in 44 games to lead all draft eligible defensemen in goals, assists and points. His 44 points is second behind Yakupov among all draft eligible skaters and his 34 assists are tops among all skaters, 2 more than Yakupov.
Despite having only played in 26 games because of injuries, Yakupov continues to lead with 53 points and tied for tops in goals at 21 with Brendan Gaunce of the Belleville Bulls. Gaunce's teammate Malcolm Subban, who is also out with an injury, continues to lead all goaltenders in goals against average and save percentage. And that's not just draft eligible goaltenders but all goaltenders.
The Kitchener Rangers' Radek Faksa continues his climb. He now has 20 goals and 22 assists in 38 games played.

The Value Of Malcolm Subban
Malcolm Subban has been out since a December 17 injury that put the number 1 ranked goaltender on the shelf for the second time this season. At the time of his injury, he led all goaltenders in goals against average and saver percentage.
As of yesterday, the Bulls sit in third place in the East Division 3 points behind Peterborough and 16 points behind Ottawa. The are in 8th place in the Eastern Conference just 1 point ahead of Oshawa for the final playoff spot.
At the time of Subban's injury the Bulls were in 2nd in the East division, just three points back of division leading Ottawa and third in the conference. So what happened?
The Bulls have gone 2-8-1 in Subban's absence allowing 48 goals in those 11 games. In the 8 losses and 1 overtime loss they've allowed 41. That's not to suggest Subban would have won every game for the Bulls but when you are sporting a 1.93 goals against average and a .938 save percentage, the teams chances of winning are better.
Consider in that time the Bulls team goals against average is 4.36 per game. And their team save percentage is .871. Those are a far cry from Subban's numbers and it would suggest that, as Subban goes, so do the Bulls.

Subban projected as top goalie in North America
As it turns out, Malcolm Subban was much more than an admirable fill-in between the pipes whenever he and his brothers got together for a little pick-up hockey.
In a family full of defensemen, it was Malcolm who always volunteered to play goalie. When he turned 12, the position stuck for good, despite the fact older brother P.K. and younger brother Jordan preferred the blue line.
"He's got phenomenal quickness, athleticism and flexibility," Central Scouting's Al Jensen told NHL.com. "He's aggressive and consistent. He can make the big save to either hold his team in the game or to keep the lead. He's very confident and smart at reading plays developing in front of him."
Will Malcolm earn the distinction of being the highest-drafted Subban? Considering he was the only 2012 draft-eligible goaltender to be invited to Hockey Canada's Summer Under-20 goaltending camp, it wouldn't be too much of a shock. P.K. was selected in the second round (No. 43) by Montreal in 2007. Jordan, who is in his initial season with Belleville, isn't draft eligible until 2013.

Yakupov and Subban Continue To Lead Draft Eligible Players
Despite a couple of injuries this season both to Nail Yakupov and Malcolm Subban, who are both out with injuries yet again. they continue to lead skaters and goaltenders respectively in stats among draft eligible players.
Yakupov has 21 goals and 32 assists for 52 points in just 26 games. He has scored one more goal than Brendan Gaunce who has played in 39 games and also leads him by 12 points. Yakupov leads Cody Ceci, who continues to lead all defensemen, in assists by a margin of 32-28 with Ceci having played 13 more games.
Subban leads not only draft eligible goaltenders, but all goaltenders with an amazing 1.93 goals against average and a remarkable .928 save percentage. Daniel Altshuller is second in both categories with a 3.38 goals against average and a .904 save percentage.

SUBBAN PUTTING HIS NAME ON THE MAP
BELLEVILLE - The Subban name has gained a prominent amount of recognition throughout the hockey world in recent years. Most notably, PK Subban – a defenceman with the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League has grabbed the attention of many with his on-ice theatrics and highlight-reel plays. But the Habs blueliner isn’t the only player putting the Subban name on the map. PK’s younger brother, Malcolm, a goaltender with the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League, is not only following in his older brother’s footsteps, but is starting to make a name for himself.
Growing up, Malcolm learned to play the game, like so many Canadian kids do, on the backyard rink of their Rexdale, Ontario home, while playing with PK, along with younger brother, and current Bulls teammate, Jordan. Their father, Karl, who immigrated to Canada from the Caribbean as a kid, was introduced to the game through street hockey with neighbourhood friends in Sudbury, Ontario. For Karl, it was a new found culture which evolved into a passion that he would later pass on to his sons as both a father and a coach.

Nail Yakupov Returns, Continues to Lead Draft Eligibles
Nail Yakupov returned to action last night and helped lead the Sarnia Sting to a 4-2 victory over the Peterborough Petes with a goal and two assists and hold onto his lead in goals, assists and points among OHL draft eligible players. Yakupov now has 19 goals and 30 assists in just 24 games.
Malcolm Subban continues to lead all OHL goaltenders in goals against average and save percentage despite an average week from him. He now boasts a stellar 1.92 goals against average and a .939 save percentage.
Cody Ceci of the Ottawa 67's, who is off to Calgary for the Team Canada World Junior Camp, continues to lead all draft eligible defensemen in goals, assists and points with 7-25-32 totals in 30 games. But look no further. Guelph Storm defenseman Matt Finn is closing the gap with 6-18-24 totals in 26 games.

3 Stars for Week Ending December 4, 2011
Since the beginning of November, we probably should have began naming this the Belleville Bulls Awards. Almost every week there's not one, but two Bulls teammates for consideration for the three stars. But there's a new kid on the block this week.
1st Star - Daniil Zharkov - Belleville Bulls : Zharkov led the Bulls to three straight victories offensively scoring six goals, two in each game in those victories, including the game winner in a 4-1 decision over Windsor. His 4 other goals came in back to back victories over Kingston, 4-2 and 8-1. Zharkov now has 11 goals in 11 games, and despite having only played those 11 games, now sits 7th in goals scored among first time draft eligible players.
2nd Star - Malcolm Subban - Belleville Bulls : Since returning from injury at the beginning of November, Subban has been dominant. He had a sparkling 1.33 GAA and .962 SV% in three games last week including a 36 save performance against Kingston, then 33 saves in the rematch and followed that up with another 33 sames over Windsor. Subban now leads the league in goals against average and save percentage. Since his return, he's been one of our three stars each week but once.
3rd Star - Scott Laughton - Oshawa Generals : Laughton recorded 1 goal and 5 assists in two games for Oshawa last week. The defensively responsible Laughton broke out with 3 assists in an 8-4 victory over Sarnia. He followed that up with a goal and 2 assists in a 9-1 thumping of Peterborough.

Bulls’ Malcolm Subban Named Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week
Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that for the second time this season Malcolm Subban of the Belleville Bulls is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week after posting a 3-0-0-0 record including a shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 0.67 and save percentage of .978 for the week ending November 27.
Subban began the week making 23 saves on Thursday as part of a 3-1 win over the Erie Otters. He followed that with his second shutout of the season on Friday stopping all 34 shots faced including 19 in the second period as first star of a 6-0 win over the Guelph Storm. He helped the Bulls win their third straight game on Sunday with 30 saves as third star of a 4-1 win over the Oshawa Generals.
Subban, a 17-year-old from Rexdale, ON, is playing in his second full season with the Bulls and is currently the OHL’s top netminder with a league-best goals-against-average of 1.89 and save percentage of .938 in 12 starts this season. He was also recently ranked the top 2012 NHL Entry Draft eligible goaltender in the OHL by NHL Central Scouting in their Preliminary Rankings.
Francois Lacerte of the Gatineau Olympiques received consideration for the second straight week this time with a 1-0-0-2 record posting a goals-against-average of 2.21 and save percentage of .947 making 126 saves on the week. In the WHL, Eric Comrie of the Tri-City Americans went 2-0-0-0 with a goals-against-average of 1.00 and save percentage of .957.

The closest voting for the draft eligible OHL 3 stars for the week is in. The 3 players selected were almost unanimous but the order wasn't. You could reverse the order and not go wrong. So here are your three stars :
1st Star - Malcolm Subban - Belleville Bulls : Since returning from injury, Subban has been the first star for 3 out of the 4 weeks in November. In 3 games last week, all Bulls victories, Subban stopped 87 of 89 shots he faced and had a shut out on the road against the Guelph Storm.
2nd Star - Brendan Gaunce - Belleville Bulls : Gaunce was named OHL player of the week yesterday and in most of our eyes, was only outplayed by his team mate Malcolm Subban. He led the Bulls offensively with 5 goals and 1 assists in three games. Gaunce now sits third in points and second in goals among draft eligible players in the OHL.

Brendan Gaunce named OHL player of the Week
Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that forward Brendan Gaunce of the Belleville Bulls is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending November 27 after scoring five goals and one assist for six points in three games with a plus-minus rating of plus-5.
Gaunce helped lift the Bulls to three straight wins while recording three straight multi-point games for the first time in his career beginning Thursday night in a 3-1 victory over the Erie Otters where he scored two goals as first star of the contest. He also scored two goals on Friday night as part of a 6-0 win over the Guelph Storm before finishing the week with another first star performance scoring a goal and an assist in a 4-1 win over the Oshawa Generals on Sunday.
Gaunce, a 17-year-old from Markham, ON, is playing in just his second OHL season with the Bulls where he currently leads the club with 15 goals and 12 assists for 27 points in 25 games. The former second overall OHL Priority Selection pick is now eligible for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft where he was recently ranked seventh among OHL skaters by NHL Central Scouting.
Also considered for the award this week was fellow 2012 NHL Entry Draft prospect Radek Faksa who scored four goals and two assists for six points in three wins for the Kitchener Rangers. Vancouver Canucks prospect Alex Friesen also helped the Niagara IceDogs to three straight wins recording six points including three goals and three assists. In goal, the Bulls’ Malcolm Subban went 3-0-0-0 posting one shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 0.67 with a save percentage of .978.

3 Stars For Week Ending November 13, 2011
The three stars for the week ending November 13, 2011 are :
1st Star - Malcolm Subban - Belleville Bulls : Subban is the first player to win the honors in back to back weeks and he's doing it returning from injury. He led the Bulls to two shootout wins. He stopped 25 of 28 shots in a 4-3 victory. He followed that up with a 32 save performance in a 2-1 win over Oshawa in which he also stopped all 6 Generals shootout shooters.
Slater Koekkoek - Peterborough Petes : Koekkoek is really beginning to pick up his game. In Just 2 games last week, the Defenseman scored once and added 5 assists and also took part in the Subway Super Series for Team OHL.

Bulls’ Malcolm Subban Named Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week
Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Malcolm Subban of the Belleville Bulls is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending November 5 after posting a 2-0-0-0 record with a shutout victory and a goals-against-average of 0.49 and a .982 save percentage.
After missing over a month due to injury, Subban returned to the Bulls’ net on Saturday and was solid making 29 saves and earning first star honours as part of a 2-1 win over the Owen Sound Attack. He then claimed first star honours again on Sunday stopping all 25 shots he faced in a 1-0 overtime win over the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors to earn his first shutout of the season.
Also considered for the award this week was Mac Carruth of the Portland Winterhawks who went 3-0-0-0 with a 1.50 goals-against-average and a .949 save percentage. In the QMJHL, Domenic Graham of the Drummondville Voltigeurs went 2-0-0-0 with a goals-against-average of 2.00 and save percentage of .927.

1st Star - Malcolm Subban - Belleville Bulls : Malcolm Subban made his return from injury and is poised to retake his position as the top draft eligible goaltender in the OHL. Subban led his team to two straight victories. First came a 2-1 victory over the Owen Sound Attack in which he stopped 29 of 30 shots. He followed that up with a 1-0 overtime victory over the Mississauga St Mikes Majors in which he made 25 saves for the shutout.
2nd Star - Brendan Gaunce - Belleville Bulls : Gaunce and his Bulls went 3-0 during the week. First up was a 6-5 overtime victory over the Ottawa 67's in which Gaunce scored twice including the overtime winner. Then came a 2-1 victory over Owen Sound in which he was in on both goals with a goal and an assist. He went pointless in a 1-0 overtime victory over Mississauga but was his solid self creating chances.
3rd Star - Radek Faksa - Kitchener Rangers : Can't say enough about how Faksa's game is coming along. He opened the week with a 2 goal performance over the Niagara Ice Dogs including the shorthanded game winning goal. He had an assist in the Rangers lone goal in the rematch with Niagara, a 3-1 loss. He closed the week out pointless in a 3-1 victory over the Oshawa Generals but gets credit for his penalty killing duties.

Seven to watch: Top OHL prospects for 2012 Draft
The top Ontario Hockey League prospect for the 2012 NHL Draft is an offensive dynamo from the Sarnia Sting, with a string of solid defensemen next on the list.
It's a story reminiscent of the 2008 Draft, when Sarnia center Steven Stamkos was the league's best prospect, ahead of a list of blueliners that included Guelph's Drew Doughty, Peterborough's Zach Bogosian and Niagara's Alex Pietrangelo.
This year, the top player available is Nail Yakupov, who spent last season breaking Stamkos' Sarnia records.
In his first season in the OHL, the 5-foot-10 1/2, 189-pound right wing led all first-year players with 49 goals and 101 points, topping Stamkos' franchise rookie record of 92 points, set in 2006-07.

2012 Draft Could Be About Defense
Every year, a player jumps out of nowhere to climb up NHL draft charts, or at least higher than expected. Think Mark Scheifele in 2011. Or Jeff Skinner in 2010.
In 2012, you could be looking at a defenseman to make that jump. Or Quite possibly a goaltender. The OHL hasn't produced a high profile goaltender in the last few years, at least in his draft year. Malcolm Subban (Belleville) and Daniel Altshuller (Oshawa) were the early favorites coming into the season but Matt Murray (Soo Greyhounds) has opened a lot of eyes through the first few weeks of the season.
While Subban has struggled and even given up starts, Altshuller has come as advertised and then some. But Murray has exceeded even his highest expectations.
But the biggest surprise could come from the defense. It is quite possible that we will see half a dozen defensemen taken in the first round, and that is from the OHL alone. Early favorites Nick Ebert (Windsor), Cody Ceci (Ottawa) and Slater Koekkoek (Peterborough) should be there.
It's the next tier where it gets interesting. Olli Maatta is starting to find his groove in London. Jesse Graham is struggling right now in Niagara but should rebound. Alex Gudbranson is in a tough situation in Kingston, where many expect them to finish last.
On the rise is Dylan Blujus who currently leads all defensemen in goals with 4 in 6 games. Matt Finn who is as pleasant a surprise as his Brampton Battalion, is tied for points with Ceci among first time draft eligible defensemen with 8 in 7 games.
One thing is for certain, NHL scouts will have their eyes full with these kids.

Players confirmed for 2011 NHL Research, Development and Orientation Camp

NEW YORK/TORONTO – Thirty-six of the top-rated players eligible for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft have accepted invitations to participate in the 2011 NHL Research, Development and Orientation Camp, August 17 and 18, the National Hockey League announced today.
Participating players were selected by NHL Central Scouting and rank high on the 2012 Futures Lists. The talented group of skaters and goaltenders from the Canadian Hockey League, USHL, United States colleges and Canadian Provincial League will show off their playing skills to general managers and talent evaluators from around the League in a unique best-on-best setting that commences their Draft-eligible seasons.
Dan Byslma, head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Dave Tippett head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes, along with NHL Hockey Operations staff will lead the players over the course of two days as they test a number of proposed rules changes, rink markings and strategies.

WHL defensemen among draft prospects to watch
Among the top players from the OHL are two players with the Sarnia Sting -- center Alex Galchenyuk (6-0, 185) and right wing Nail Yakupov (6-0, 190).
Yakupov, born in Nizhnekamsk, Russia, led the team with 101 points, including 49 goals (16 power-play goals) and 52 assists in 2010-11. Galchenyuk meanwhile had 31 goals, including 10 with the man advantage, and 83 points in 68 games.
Central Scouting's Chris Edwards also likes what he sees in Windsor Spitfires defenseman Nick Ebert (5-11, 195), a native of Livingston, N.J. In 64 games, Ebert had 11 goals and 41 points. Ottawa 67's defenseman Cody Ceci (6-1, 203), also an 'A List' player, was the only other 2012 draft-eligible player besides Murray to receive an invite to Team Canada's summer WJC evaluation camp.
Kitchener Rangers center Matia Marcantuoni (5-11, 185) also will command plenty of attention next season.
