Yakupov and Subban Continue To Lead Draft Eligible Players

Despite a couple of injuries this season both to Nail Yakupov and Malcolm Subban, who are both out with injuries yet again. they continue to lead skaters and goaltenders respectively in stats among draft eligible players.

Yakupov has 21 goals and 32 assists for 52 points in just 26 games. He has scored one more goal than Brendan Gaunce who has played in 39 games and also leads him by 12 points. Yakupov leads Cody Ceci, who continues to lead all defensemen, in assists by a margin of 32-28 with Ceci having played 13 more games.

Subban leads not only draft eligible goaltenders, but all goaltenders with an amazing 1.93 goals against average and a remarkable .928 save percentage. Daniel Altshuller is second in both categories with a 3.38 goals against average and a .904 save percentage.

3 Stars For Week Ending January 1, 2012

The OHL season is back in full swing after the holiday break and with it is our weekly 3 stars among draft eligible players from the OHL. So here are your 3 stars from last week:

1st Star - Dylan Blujus - Brampton Battalion : The Battalion are having a surprising season in the eyes of many and Dylan Blujus has been a huge part of it all season long, not just last week and being named our 1st star. The Battalion began the week on the road in Barrie with a 4-3 shootout loss. Blujus contributed 2 assists in that game. That was followed by a 4-1 home victory over Mississauga with Blujus getting a goal and an assist. His goal was also the game winning goal. They closed out the week with a 4-2 win over Belleville with Blujus notching an assist, that coming on the game winner.

2nd Star - Brett Welychka - London Knights : The Knights are missing several players at the WJC and the WJC U17 and this was Welychka's time to shine. London opened the week with a 6-1 bouncing by the Plymouth Whalers in which Welychka was pointless. He followed that up with 2 goals in a 7-3 win over the Sarnia Sting. He closed out the week with 2 goals and an assist in the rematch with Sarnia - a 3-0 London win in which one goal was a shorthanded goal. Playing in just his 20th game of the season, Welychka now has 4 goals and 3 assists in his last 5 games.

3rd Star - Daniel Altshuller - Oshawa Generals : It was a solid week for Altshuller who posted 3 consecutive wins beginning with a 31 save performance in a 4-1 victory over the Erie Otters. That was followed by a 27 save performance in a 5-2 win over the Kingston Frontenacs. He closed out the week with 39 saves in a 4-3 win over the Owen Sound Attack. Altshuller is behind only Malcolm Subban among draft eligible goaltenders in goals against average and save percentage.

Daniel Altshuller: Not An Easy Ride

Daniel Altshuller has gained a reputation as being a top notch goaltender the past couple seasons, now he’s getting a chance to do it in the Ontario Hockey League with the Oshawa Generals.

The seventeen-year-old was acquired by the Generals from the Belleville Bulls this past summer. The Bulls already had Malcom Subban (who is a top rated goaltending prospect in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft) in net and wouldn’t have been able to give Alsthuller substantial playing time. For the young goaltender the trade has worked out well.

2012 Draft Could Be About Defense

Every year, a player jumps out of nowhere to climb up NHL draft charts, or at least higher than expected. Think Mark Scheifele in 2011. Or Jeff Skinner in 2010.

In 2012, you could be looking at a defenseman to make that jump. Or Quite possibly a goaltender. The OHL hasn't produced a high profile goaltender in the last few years, at least in his draft year. Malcolm Subban (Belleville) and Daniel Altshuller (Oshawa) were the early favorites coming into the season but Matt Murray (Soo Greyhounds) has opened a lot of eyes through the first few weeks of the season.

While Subban has struggled and even given up starts, Altshuller has come as advertised and then some. But Murray has exceeded even his highest expectations.

But the biggest surprise could come from the defense. It is quite possible that we will see half a dozen defensemen taken in the first round, and that is from the OHL alone. Early favorites Nick Ebert (Windsor), Cody Ceci (Ottawa) and Slater Koekkoek (Peterborough) should be there.

It's the next tier where it gets interesting. Olli Maatta is starting to find his groove in London. Jesse Graham is struggling right now in Niagara but should rebound. Alex Gudbranson is in a tough situation in Kingston, where many expect them to finish last.

On the rise is Dylan Blujus who currently leads all defensemen in goals with 4 in 6 games. Matt Finn who is as pleasant a surprise as his Brampton Battalion, is tied for points with Ceci among first time draft eligible defensemen with 8 in 7 games.

One thing is for certain, NHL scouts will have their eyes full with these kids.

Daniel Altshuller

Daniel Altshuller - Oshawa Generals

6'3" - 190 LBS
D.O.B. July 24, 1994

The 45th overall pick of the Belleville Bulls started the 2010-11 season as a backup for the Jr A Nepean Raiders. An unfortunate injury to their starter thrust Altshuller into the limelight.

After a somewhat rocky start, he went on a run that opened everyone's eyes. It eventually led to an invite to the Team Ontario Camp for the U-17 World Challenge where expectations were low. But he eventually won the starters job and led Ontario to a gold medal and was named the tournaments top goaltender. He posted a 1.66 GAA and .924 SV% in the 6 games.

Once again as a long shot, Altshuller was invited to Team Canada Camp for the Ivan Hlinka Tournament where he wasn't expected to make the squad. And once again he beat the odds and led Canada to a gold medal with a 4-1 record and a 1.29 GAA while being named player of the game in Canada's final game.

It became evident that Altshuller was going the NCAA route where he could be a starter and finally, on August 31, the Bulls pulled the trigger and traded him to the Oshawa Generals. The Generals weak spot heading towards camp was obviously their goaltending. The acquisition of Altshuller solidifies the position for them and he will no doubt get the bulk of the action in goal.

So far in preseason, Altshuller has lived up to all the hype and then some. We have him ranked second in draft eligible goaltenders behind Malcolm Subban, but if he continues winning as he has everywhere he has played, he will quite easily dominate his position. Prior to the trade, and if Altshuller had chosen the Bulls over the NCAA, the Bulls could have had the OHL's most dominant tandem in goal in recent history with Altshuller and Subban.

Altshuller has good size, positions himself well while taking up large portions of the net in doing so. He has excellent lateral movement and very quick reflexes. He's well poised and is especially strong mentally, always thinking about the next save whether he just let in a bad goal or made a great save. He seems to play with that Carey Price calmness about him under pressure and with a heavy workload.
