1st Star - Trevor Morbeck - Kingston Frontenacs : Morbeck played in three games and scored twice while adding three assists and was a plus three for the Frontenacs. He began the week with a goal and an assist and was a plus 1 in a 7-3 win over the Peterborough Petes. In the rematch, a 6-4 Petes victory, he registered an assist and was a plus 1. He added another goal and assist and once again was a plus 1 in a 6-4 loss to the Barrie Colts.

He followed that up with another goal and assist and a plus 2 in a 6-2 loss to the Brampton Battalion.

Half Way Point - 3 Stars Leaders

It's the unofficial halfway point of the OHL season, and today we look at who's leading our weekly 3 stars selection.

Each week a group of respected OHL followers vote on the draft eligible 3 stars from the previous week. (You can see the list of weekly stars by clicking the 3 stars tab at the top of this page). To rank them to this point, and throughout the season, a player is awarded 3 points for a first star, 2 points for a second star, and 1 point for a third star selection to get to their total points.

Below is the list of leaders showing how many 1st, 2nd, and 3rd star selections they've had, their points and their rankings. Anyone who's received one of the 3 stars at all during the season is shown.

3 Stars For Week Ending December 18, 2011

Here are your draft eligible 3 stars for the week ending December 18, 2011

1st Star - Chris Marchese - Windsor Spitfires : When Marchese was traded to the Spitfires early last week, we said in this blog that you could expect his point totals to increase and that he would be worth keeping an eye on. Well, those that vote did and Marchese came through. In 2 games for the Spitfires, Marchese notched 3 goals and 2 assists. The spitfires lost both games, the first 6-4 to Owen Sound where he notched a goal and added 2 assists, the other a 5-4 loss to Saginaw in which he scored twice. As we said before, he'll be worth keeping an eye on.

2nd Star - Gemel Smith - Owen Sound Attack : It isn't unfamiliar territory for Smith to be named one of our 3 stars. He's become an offensive weapon for the Attack and last week he provided 2 goals and 2 assists in 3 games. He opened the week with a goal and an assist and a plus 4 in a 6-4 win over Windsor. He followed that up with the same tallies in a 3-1 loss to Sarnia. He went pointless in a 3-1 win over Kitchener but created numerous opportunities.

3rd Star - Matt Murray - Soo Greyhounds : Murray may come as a little bit of a surprise here, but you have to have had seen him play. The Soo started the week with a 3-1 win over Saginaw in which Murray stopped 33 of 34 shots. That was followed by a 3-2 Shoot out loss to Kitchener where he was absolutely spectacular stopping 46 of 48 shots to give the Greyhounds even a chance. The surprise of putting him here is they closed out the week with a 7-3 loss to Guelph. But through 2 periods he stopped 24 of 27 shots and was down 3-2 and again gave the Soo every chance. But penalty trouble in the 3rd was just too much and the Storm blew the game wide open, not to mention the last goal came with 3 seconds left.

They followed that with a 3-2 loss against Windsor in which he was kept off the board. It was his goal that put the nail in the coffin and just about ensured there would e no comeback.

2nd Star - Matt Finn - Guelph Storm : Like a good wine, Finn gets better and better with time. Statistically, it wasn't one of his better weeks but his play at both ends of the rink opened a lot of eyes. Guelph struggle throughout the week beginning with an 8-5 loss to Barrie. Finn notched a goal and 2 assists in the loss. That was followed by a 1 assist effort in a 6-1 loss to Owen Sound where he was on the ice for just 1 goal against. They ended the week with a 2-1 OT loss to London in which Finn played every situation and logged lots of ice time.

3 Stars for Week Ending December 4, 2011

Since the beginning of November, we probably should have began naming this the Belleville Bulls Awards. Almost every week there's not one, but two Bulls teammates for consideration for the three stars. But there's a new kid on the block this week.

1st Star - Daniil Zharkov - Belleville Bulls : Zharkov led the Bulls to three straight victories offensively scoring six goals, two in each game in those victories, including the game winner in a 4-1 decision over Windsor. His 4 other goals came in back to back victories over Kingston, 4-2 and 8-1. Zharkov now has 11 goals in 11 games, and despite having only played those 11 games, now sits 7th in goals scored among first time draft eligible players.

2nd Star - Malcolm Subban - Belleville Bulls : Since returning from injury at the beginning of November, Subban has been dominant. He had a sparkling 1.33 GAA and .962 SV% in three games last week including a 36 save performance against Kingston, then 33 saves in the rematch and followed that up with another 33 sames over Windsor. Subban now leads the league in goals against average and save percentage. Since his return, he's been one of our three stars each week but once.

3rd Star - Scott Laughton - Oshawa Generals : Laughton recorded 1 goal and 5 assists in two games for Oshawa last week. The defensively responsible Laughton broke out with  3 assists in an 8-4 victory over Sarnia. He followed that up with a goal and 2 assists in a 9-1 thumping of Peterborough.

3 Stars For Week Ending November 13, 2011

The three stars for the week ending November 13, 2011 are :

1st Star - Malcolm Subban - Belleville Bulls : Subban is the first player to win the honors in back to back weeks and he's doing it returning from injury. He led the Bulls to two shootout wins. Nail Yakupov - Sarnia Sting : It wasn't a typical offensive week for Yakupov, scoring just once and adding 2 assists in two games. Last season, my three stars of the week (draft eligible players only) was a very popular topic for visitors. And beginning next week, the feature will return, but with an added twist.

Joining me in making the selections will be a group of bloggers and scouts from around Ontario that witness the players on a regular basis. We will combine our picks and use a scoring system to select our 3 stars.

Check back weekly for the results.
