Gianluca Curcuruto - Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds
6'1" - 187 LBS
D.O.B. February 25, 1994
Curcuruto is one of a half dozen OHL defensemen that are in serious contention to be first round draft picks in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
Now in his second season with the Greyhounds, Curcuruto played in 56 games last season posting 1 goal and 25 assists in those contests. His minus 1 was somewhat of a surprise on a team that finished dead last in the entire OHL.
During the 2009-2010 season, Curcuruto scored 38 goals and added 48 assists in 64 games for the Mississauga Minor Midgets, leading him to be selected in the first round, 14th overall, in the 2010 OHL Priority Draft by the Greyhounds.
Curcuruto won a gold medal for Team Ontario at the World Hockey Challenge Under 17 where he had a goal and 3 assists, including the helper on the game winning goal to clinch the gold medal. He is on the NHL A list of players to watch for the 2012 Entry Draft and was one of 3 OHL defensemen invited to the NHL Research and Development camp in the summer.
Curcuruto is a very mobile and very good skater. He sees the ice very well and is an above average puck mover. He already possesses an NHL quality shot having it clocked at 96 MPH as a 16 year old. He doesn't shy away from the physicality of the game. His skating allows him to position himself well defensively and carries an active stick in doing so. With more experience, maturity and confidence, he'll be able to control the game from the back end and he'll need show that this season to move up the draft charts.
